During the months of May through December, 2009, we are offering
Motivational Interviewing training specifically for Minnesota
employment services professionals who work with Minnesota Family
Investment Program (MFIP) clients. This training is the result of a partnership between the Minnesota Department of Human Services and MCTC, with the goal of providing best practices training to Minnesota employment services professionals
who work with MFIP clients.
What is Motivational Interviewing?
Motivational
Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered and directive method to enhance
motivation to change. Developed in the addictions field, it has proven
effective in reducing substance abuse and related problems. For
additional information about MI, visit www.motivationalinterview.org.
Why should I be trained in Motivational Interviewing?
Motivational
Interviewing moves counselors and others interacting with MFIP clients away from aggressive or confrontational
approaches and towards bringing about change. MI training provides you
with an opportunity to practice the subtle balance between its
directive and client-centered approaches. Training will help you to:
- increase client engagement in treatment
- reinforce client self-motivation
- increase client success in family, treatment, and work goals
- contribute to better client outcomes overall
- understand the spirit of Motivational Interviewing
- improve work climate
- provide common language for peer-to-peer conversations
- improve implementation of the Employability Measure
MI training was developed specifically to meet the requirements for
continuing education for alcohol and drug counselors, social workers,
psychologists, marriage and family therapists, crisis counselors,
nursing and allied health professionals. This MI training is designed to help implement DHS's Employability Measure.
The Employability Measure
The
Employability Measure (EM) is a relatively quick and efficient measure
of the status of your MFIP participant in the following 11 areas of
life functioning: transportation, dependent care, education, housing,
social support, child behavior, financial, legal, safe living
environment, health, and workplace skills. Job counselors who have used
the measure confirm that it covers most major issues faced by MFIP
participants related to obtaining and retaining employment.
